How to Get Help with File Explorer in Windows 10

The File Explorer Windows browser receives much less praise than it deserves. It is one of the most complete and powerful windows operating system tools and it improves significantly with each version.

If you have used other file managers in other operating systems, you can not deny that however beautiful they look, they do not let you do everything Windows lets you do.

In Windows 10 several new things were included that make the browser even better and that few users take advantage of.

Today we are going to teach you several of them, we are going to give you some tips to squeeze the file explorer to the fullest and we will also tell you how you can change your appearance, add extra things or remove those that you do not like.

file explorer

Add tabs to File Explorer Windows

This is something that some Linux users are already accustomed to, and to which anyone who has used a web browser in their life will find it super practical. There is an application called Clover that adds tabs to Windows Explorer.

It works from Windows XP to Windows 10. It's free, and not only lets you open several folders within the same window thanks to the use of tabs very similar to Chrome or Firefox, but it lets you add favorites to a bar, or change The theme is compatible with Google Chrome.

You can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + T to open new tabs, with CTRL + W you close a tab, and with CTRL + Tab you switch between the different tabs.

If you are someone who prefers to use your keyboard than the mouse, you will save a good amount of time between tasks.

Restart the File Explorer Windows in case of emergency

While we said that Windows File Explorer is very good, we did not say it was perfect. If you know all the users of this operating system is the curse of crashes and applications that stop responding, the Explorer is one of the most suffering from this evil.

At Microsoft they know it, and that's why from Windows 8 they added a button dedicated to restarting Windows Explorer from the Task Manager. You just have to right click on the start button and select the Administrator, or use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.

Task Manager
From there in the Processes tab, look for the Windows File Explorer in the list of active applications, select it and then click on the "Restart" button that appears below and to the right.

See advanced audio and video information in the file explorer

With the MediaTab add-on you can get detailed information of multimedia files by simply right clicking on them. You can know things like codec, bitrate, resolution, code options, metadata and more without having to open a separate application.

Hide frequent folders from quick access in file explorer

In Windows 10 a new feature was added to the Windows file Explorer section called "Quick Access". Every time the system detects that you open a lot of certain folders, it automatically adds them to that list. This sometimes generates very long and somewhat annoying lists. It may be that one day I opened a folder a lot, but it does not mean that I want a direct access to it forever.

Luckily, we can turn this off so that it looks more like the favorites that appeared in the browser in Windows 8. To do this we have to open the folder options of the browser:

browser folders
Now in the Privacy options in the General tab, uncheck the boxes "Show recently used files or folders in Quick Access".

Folder options
You can also take advantage of changing the behavior of the browser when you first start it. By default it opens in Quick Access, but you can choose to start in This computer, or equivalent to the old "My Computer".

Change the type of view quickly

You probably know that by right clicking inside any Windows file Explorer folder you open a contextual menu to change how the icons look. You know, small, medium, large, very large, mosaics, content or details.

What you may not know is that you do not have to do a single click to navigate between all those views, all you have to do is press the CTRL key and move the mouse wheel. The GIF above shows it clearly.

Rename multiple files at once

Renaming files in file Explorer is easier than some believe, if you know how to use the tool well, you will save many, many clicks. If for example you want to change the name of several files at the same time for different things, you just have to right click on it and choose "Rename" in the contextual menu that appears.

An even simpler way is to make a soft left click on the file and wait a second for the name to be editable. When you have changed the name you do not have to press Enter, you do not have to make another click, simply press the TAB key to pass the next file and rename it directly.

You can also select multiple files at the same time, right click, select the option "Rename" and choose a name for them, Windows Explorer will add a number in parentheses automatically to each element to differentiate them.

Add the option to send files to other devices

One of the most useful applications I have found in this life is called Pushbullet. This simple tool allows us to send files, notes, links, and images between different devices.

If you download the Windows version, it will be integrated with Windows Explorer so that each time you right click on any file, you will have the option to send it to your tablet, smartphone, another computer, another browser, a friend, etc. and this will receive it as a push notification. It can be incredibly convenient.

Do advanced searches

If you usually manage a lot of documents on your computer and there are so many that you always have trouble finding things the first time, you probably need more help to use the search function in Windows Explorer.

For example, something simple is that from the search drawer you can search for files according to the size and date of modification, but you may not know the different operators to do advanced searches that can be used in it.

Search Results On This Equipment

For example, the "AND" operator is used to search for files that contain two specific words. "Presentation AND May" will search for files containing the words "Presentation" and "May" in the name no matter where they are in the file.

The "NOT" operator does the opposite, "NOT Mayo Presentation" will search for files that contain the word "Presentation" and exclude all those that also contain the word "May". The "OR" operator will search for files that contain any of the two search terms, together or separately.

Delete search history

If for any reason you want to delete the search history of the Windows File Explorer, you can do it. Normally the browser remembers all the searches you have done before and when you start writing something in the drawer suggests past searches, this can be very useful and serve to save time, but if you share the computer with someone you could have your reasons to want delete it

Search File Explorer

To do this open the File Explorer, click inside the search box and then in "Search" under the "Search tools" tab.

Then click on "Recent searches" and there will appear the option to erase the history.

Make Windows 10 File Explorer look more like Windows 7

If you do not like the so-called "ribbon" menu that first appeared in Windows 8 and adds a lot of additional options to the file browser at the top, you can get rid of it with a tool called OldNewExplorer that makes your browser look like more to Windows 7.

That is all what you can do with your files in the file explorer.

How to Open CRDownload Files

If you use Google Chrome, there is a strong possibility that you have seen files with the extension ".crdownload" in your download directory. Google Chrome creates one of these files each time you start downloading a file.

The .crdownload files are automatically renamed when a download completes successfully, but can be left if there is an error in the download.

As they are partial files there is no point in open.

When (and Why) Chrome Creates These

Google Chrome creates .crdownload files for your downloads. For example, let's say you start downloading a music called Song.mp3 in Google Chrome. "Song.mp3.cdownload" will appear in your downloads folder. This will grow in size while Chrome continues the download. When Chrome finishes downloading the entire file, Chrome will rename it to Song.mp3, removing the .crdownload suffix.

The .crdownload file extension indicates that the file has not yet finished downloading. So you can't open it yet.

Other web browsers can store downloads in progress in a different folder and move them to your downloads folder when they finish, but Chrome simply stores the incomplete file in your Downloads folder.

If you see a .crdownload, check your Downloads list in Chrome. You can see in the Download tray at the bottom of your Chrome window or click on the menu and select Downloads.

If it is still being downloaded, do not delete the .crdownload file - just let Chrome finish downloading it. Then you can open the downloades file.

Of course, if you really do not want to download it anymore, you can cancel the download in Chrome. Chrome will automatically delete the associated .crdownload file when you cancel the download.

Chrome Can Summarize Download With These Files

You can have a .crdownload files out there even though Chrome is not downloading something at the moment.

Open the Downloads page in Chrome and you may see that a download is incomplete.

This indicates that Chrome was downloading a file, but there was a problem - your Internet connection may have been interrupted, or the server may have cut the connection. You can also "pause" a download and summarize it later, in which case Chrome will keep the .crdownload file there.

You can try to click on the Summarize button. Chrome will try to summarize where it left off and add the rest of the file to the .crdownload . But summarizing may not always work properly. You can simply want to download the file again from the beginning.

When can you delete these files?

You are free to delete it at any time you like. If no download is in progress and you do not need to summarize a download using the file, go ahead and delete the crdownload file.

You will want to delete the .crdownload file when you no longer need it. For example, if you see your Downloads folder and see files called Song (1) .mp3 and Song.mp3.crdownload, you can delete it ending in .crdownload. This is simply an incomplete download file that you do not need. You will not be able to open it.

If you see an old for a file that you tried to download some time ago, you can definitely delete it. This can happen if you skip and do not clean the Downloads folder regularly.

If you try to download and come back to see a .crdownload file sitting in your Downloads folder, it failed to download properly (or continues to download). You can go to the Chrome download manager and retry the download. The .crdownload provides a reminder that you were going to download a specific file, but that it did not arrive successfully.

So that's what this format is - a partially complete Chorme download. It is a download in process, a failed download, or a slow download file extension.

Microsoft Internet Explorer cache
It is used by Microsoft Internet Explorer. Cache file.

Each time you open a Web page, your browser creates a cache file (a temporary copy) of the page's text and graphics. When you open the page again, for example, when you click on the toolbar Back button, your browser checks the Web site server for changes to the page.

If the page has changed, your browser retrieves a new version over the network. If the page hasn't changed, your browser uses the cache files from your RAM or hard drive to display the page. For example, Internet Explorer caches Web pages to both memory (RAM) and disk (hard drive) until the respective cache is full; Internet Explorer then rotates out pages based on age. Internet Explorer designed this system to help load Web pages quicker.

However, if you've viewed lots of Web pages, you may have an overloaded hard disk cache, which Internet Explorer will have to check before it loads a new page. Unfortunately, over time, your browser's cache grows. A cache full of outdated information is worse than no cache at all. It causes problems with Java applets, causes you to see out of date text or images, and makes your browser sluggish starting and exiting. The solution is to clear out the cache.

Digital Audio Tape (DAT or R-DAT) is a signal recording and playback medium developed by Sony in the mid 1980s. In appearance it is similar to a compact audio cassette, using 4 mm magnetic tape enclosed in a protective shell, but is roughly half the size at 73 mm × 54 mm × 10.5 mm.

As the name suggests, the recording is digital rather than analog. DAT has the ability to record at higher, equal or lower sampling rates than a CD (48, 44.1 or 32 kHz sampling rate respectively) at 16 bits quantization.

If a digital source is copied then the DAT will produce an exact clone, unlike other digital media such as Digital Compact Cassette or non-Hi-MD MiniDisc, both of which use lossy data compression.

The spot interface comprises an active region represented by a small graphical display element (GDE) having the appearance of a sphere, which unless disabled by a user, is always visible regardless of which is the topmost window.

When a mouse pointer is moved into the spot GDE, a ring or collar having four radial quadrants representing menu items is displayed after waiting a user specified length of time.

These radial menu items are displayed around the GDE. When the mouse pointer is subsequently moved into any of the four quadrants of the collar, a secondary rectangular interface hierarchically associated with the quadrant is displayed after waiting a user specified length of time.

The secondary interface may be locked opened such that it will not close when the mouse pointer is moved out of area defined by the interface. Periodic animation of the spot GDE may be provided.

How to open .apk files

The .apk files are applications for Android (Android Package), similar to the .exe in Windows. If you click on an .apk file from a mobile phone or tablet with Android a program will be installed.

Step 1

Files with .apk extension are packages that contain an application for Android. They have the same operation as the classic .exe files found in Windows. We click on them (from Android) and an application will be installed on your device.

They can not be installed in Windows by default (at the end of this page we will learn how to do it). They are only for devices with Android.

To open files in .apk format you should download it to your Android phone or tablet and open it from there.

Step 2

To install an .apk file on Android you must activate the option "Unknown origins" by going to: Settings -> Security

Once this is done, you simply click on the file.

A window will appear that you must accept, and it will start to be installed.

If you are an Android user you often find sites that suggest downloading the APK of some software. It is simpler than it seems but, at the same time, it can represent a risk.

What does APK mean?

Let's start with the most basic, for those users little related to technicalities. APK is called files with extension corresponding to .apk and whose full meaning is Application Package File, which was designed for the Android operating system.

What is it for?

Through these files it is possible to install programs that have been compressed (similar to a ZIP), they work in both phones and tablets -in general in any platform with a similar structure.

It is worth mentioning that, in order to perform a successful installation, it is necessary to be familiar with all the terms related to the topic, since it is not as simple as downloading an application from Google Play, opening it and enjoying it.

Is it recommended to install APKs?

Like all content that does not come from the Google store, you must test your common sense to know from which sites these files can be downloaded without risk. Not all APK files are harmful, because these sometimes represent applications that were removed from the market for different reasons that do not necessarily have to do with being a threat to your phone or tablet. They also serve for the beta versions that many developers put on their sites so that users who install it give their opinion and improve or fix errors.

If you are one of those who are constantly looking to exploit the benefits of having an Android phone, it is worth having an ativirus, but before leaving all the work to a security software, analyze the sites that suggest the download of such files and above all, know well what you are about to install to your gadget.

If I found a secure site, how do I install it?

A .apk file could contain other formats such as .dex, .res, AndroidManifest.xml, resourcers.arsc or classes.dex, to name a few, which would need specific software such as Winzip or WinRAR to read them, or an emulator. But if we think of most of the APKs, the dynamics is quite simple and only requires attention, since you usually have to click on a link that activates the download of the file and it will be hosted in your Files or Downloads section within the phone or tablet, no matter which cell phone manufacturer or model you use.

If you are installing a .apk for the first time you will surely see a message warning that the phone is set to not install programs from unknown sources.

For which you just have to go to the Settings menu.

Then to the Security section and activate the box from Unknown sources to be able to complete the installation. In some phones it appears as Unknown sources.

The .apk file can be downloaded from the phone and installed directly. If you have it on the computer, simply connect the phone by USB cable. Then, pass the file to the memory of the device.

Google allows you to activate or deactivate this option. So that you can exploit Android resources, although yes, in the small letters you read "at your own risk".
